Big data and the Internet of Things (IoT) are keys to this new era, enabling compelling opportunities for agencies that can harness the immense volumes of data being produced. Devices of all kinds and from all industries are capturing torrents of information that, when parsed, have the potential to make our world safer and more efficient. By 2020, the expectation is that some 30 billion devices will be connected to the Internet. The practice of bolting stand-alone applications piecemeal onto various systems as needed over the past few decades has resulted in silos that wall off individual lines of business and duplicate IT infrastructures throughout agencies and jurisdictions.
