First responders are unable to enter an unknown underground environment on a subway vehicle in the event of a mine collapse or earthquake, which could put them at risk. Help sometimes arrives later than desired since rescuers must first make sure the area is structurally intact and the air is breathable. Teams are building autonomous robots to compete in a DARPA competition. These robots will be able to map and explore these potentially hazardous subterranean environments, as well as recognize items that first responders may find useful, such as fire extinguishers, backpacks, or survivors.
