How the commodification of tactics and techniques has given rise to an industrial revolution of global cybercrime
In Tenable’s 2021 Threat Landscape Retrospective report, the Security Response Team determined that at least 38% of all data breaches in 2021 were the result of ransomware attacks, compared to 35% in 2020. In the healthcare sector, ransomware has accounted for 36.2% of violations attacks, while it accounted for 24.7% of education violations. This doesn’t mean ransomware is less prevalent in other industries. However, due to the stringent reporting requirements for healthcare organizations in the United States, it is not surprising that most ransomware attacks are reported in that industry. A recent Sophos survey found that 66% of companies reported experiencing a ransomware attack in 2021. In fact, no organization is truly safe from ransomware.
